I really liked the atmosphere and world of Vesper, but the story was contrived and bland I felt.

I’ve seen District 9 mentioned as kind of biopunk, so maybe if that counts, I’d say that’s my favorite.

Are we just putting the word “punk” at the end of things to make them appear as if they’re new again?

This isn’t technically fully biopunk because space ships and stuff, but the biology of the world in Prospector plays a huge role and I’d definitely recommend seeing it in part just because of how well they did portraying an alien world with a lot of weird alien quirks to it.

Depends how you define it but Annihilation was pretty good. Also Altered Carbon though that’s a series

I would reckon it’s analogous to steam, arcane, or solar punk. Where the technology and society of the world is primarily if not ubiquitously based around the concept in question, so biopunk would be a world where biological enhancement and biotech are central

The only movie I can think of off the top of my head is eXistenZ

Kinda? Although that is much more cyberpunk. I think a movie about like the Zerg but they are humans would be closer, think Illithid tech

Now I’m wondering if the Matrix or Avatar series would have any overlap with biopunk. Matrix is low on bio and Avatar is low on punk?

District 9 mentioned above has been the first - “okay, that’s biopunk” - that clicked for me.

Avatar for sure has some elements, I haven’t seen the second but the first was still a bit reliant on mainline tech for sci-fi.

District 9 probably is but it’s been a hot minute since I’ve seen it

    Well, two obvious ones:

Society. Except it’s not punk, it’s the rich who are a different species.

Species. The first film is just Humans making a massive mistake about alien contagion, but the sequels, lower and lower budget, “democratize” the alien infection. So many tentacle babies. Everyone can have one.

The best that comes to mind is Crimes of the Future. There are people growing new organs and altering their digestive system to eat plastic.

The book Borne was supposed to get a movie or TV show adaptation at some point. I really hope they make this well cause that’s one of the best examples in my opinion.
