It depends on what you’re peddling.

MAGA gets paid in lies, and progressives in disappointment. Liberals and conservatives get a weekly stock tip call from Pelosi or Tuberville, respectively. Tankies get paid in vodka and cigarettes, and libertarians in crypto.

Tankies get paid in vodka and cigarettes

I choose to believe this is literally true. Like Russia or China is running this really, really weird international psyop. They find depressed edgy American teenagers online, and literally send them shipments of vodka and cigarettes, on the explicit bargain that they have to post Russian or CCP propaganda. Or Hell, maybe it’s North Korea doing it. You know, it has to be North Korea. This feels like their type of weird. Regardless of the source, it’s a vast shill/edge lord army literally paid for in vodka and cigarettes smuggled over the border. I know it’s ridiculous and completely impractical logistically. But damn it, I do not care. From now on this will be my internal image of tankies. American teenagers literally paid in North Korean vodka and cigarettes.

Put your oven to heat up to maybe 175 degrees? Take some flour and sugar and salt and, I guess, baking powder? Mix in correct proportions, add enough of some form of edible fat and a suitable amount of a liquid safe for eating. Mix well. Pour in forms.

Put the forms on a baking tray and into the oven. If you’re very lucky and you remembered to add the unlisted ingredients in correct amounts, you now have something cupcake-like. Put some toppings on.

        Yoghurt.

…what? Nobody you know IRL uses Facebook, Linkedin, Insragram, Bluesky, Twitter, or That Google Thing?

How is that possible? I don’t think I could find anyone here in Finland who could say what you’re saying. Need more data about this case of yours!

I don’t even know how it’s possible myself. Everyone around here just seems like a massive Luddite. Most stores around here only barely got the ability to use tap and pay within the last 3 years. It’s like a technological black hole, despite being a 2 hour drive away from silicon valley.

The one good thing is that I have yet to encounter anywhere that makes me scan a QR code to see their menu.

Really, this amounts to a question of who has recommended lemmy to others. Which is an interesting question.

I’ve recommended it to others, but none are interested, which is extra surprising considering how many of them work in tech or tech adjacent.

Lemmy is more its memes than its technocommunist roots. It’s not a very sticky experience if you don’t like the memes. (I like the memes)

I mentioned it, but didn’t try to recommend it to my forty something sisters who mostly use Facebook, because I figured it was a lost cause (and we’re small enough that I’d be very identifiable from my comments), but try were both very interested in it. Unfortunately, I lost them trying to explain it.

I don’t like recommending to friends because then they’ll ask me what my account is and I prefer to stay anonymous. I feel like I probably have friends that are on Lemmy and haven’t shared with me for the same reason tbh.

The worst thing I ever did was get to the front page of Reddit back in 2010 and then all my friends knew my handle forever.

I considered it when I got my friends to join Reddit ~20 years ago. I made a second account that just posted links to cat pics, no comments. Cute animals are a safe bet.

Bonus, they started sending me cute pictures of their ferrets and dogs that I wish I had backed up beyond a long forgotten flickr

It took 10 years to meet anyone that used Reddit. I assume it’s gonna take another 10 to meet anyone on this platform.

about ten years ago, while playing in a bar locals team tournament. some people from the foosball scene but mostly regulars from the bar . this one guy who was pretty good first told me about Reddit. but like

oh I’m reddit famous, yay my posts get to the front page all the time i didn’t like the dude so I’ve always been really private about my relationship with any platform

I’ll brag about making top 20 counterstrike players one week in the 1990s through wql and gamespy

no. It’s difficult to recommend it, “no it’s good trust me, there’s like none of the subs you like, and also you should go to the settings and block this list of words, also block these instances, and also do you know what a Tankie is?”

If I talk with people about Lemmy, I’ll usually replace “lemmy” with “this social media I use, kinda like Mastodon, but for Reddit instead of Twitter” as to avoid them joining lemmy.ml and thinking that that’s the entirety of Lemmy.

A lot of people block political keywords and related communities, and most niche subs aren’t there

It’s easy to find other Lemmy users IRL. Show up to any Linux meet up, and roughly 5-10% seem to use Lemmy.

But even for reddit I only know a person in real life that uses it. I tried to convert him, he said “there are too many Linux apologists” 🤷🏻‍♂️

I don’t even know anyone who uses BlueSky and that’s considerably more trendy lately. Granted, most of my contacts are 20 something college girls so it’s pretty much TikTok as far as the eye can see.

Almost all the ones I know don’t use any social media besides private messaging which we do on Signal, SMS or E-mail. Looks like you got unlucky or I got very lucky.
