used RIF for 7 years, tried using the official app but RIF was just so much better. when i uninstalled it two weeks out of protest, it really felt like i had to say goodbye to an old friend. i do enjoy lemmy, but…

I was really skeptical about Connect at first but I discovered that the things I dislike can all be changed in the settings, now I really like it!

I don’t know why I haven’t installed it yet, but I moved it off of my home screen. Now there’s a Lemmy app to help my muscle memory.

I’m a RiF refugee too. Used it for almost a decade, now that it’s gone I find the official app to be very difficult to use.

The Fediverse has been really cool and I’m glad I took the jump. I was apprehensive at first, but I’ve found Lemmy to be pretty fun so far!

I think this is the only poppinkream I’ve ever seen that doesn’t have citations all over it.

I stated using Jerboa*, which feels a little similar in spirit. Had to jump trough some hoops though, as your login server needs at least version 0.18 to work.

Jerboa was ok, but things started to irritate me so I found Liftoff, which was a much more polished app. Currently using Connect for Lemmy as it’s the closest to my original Reddit app

I actually also switched to Liftoff. Will try Connect now. Thanks for the recommendation.

I’m using Connect for Lemmy. Has all I need. I never used an app for reddit though was always on mobile web, which isn’t so good for lemmy

        • If you’re on android: I’d recommend checking out Summit for Lemmy. The layout reminds me of RIF!

        • Try to participate. Let’s build a community. This “mass exodus” from reddit is different than previous ones. A majority of power users that made Reddit what it was have either quit or are now on the fediverse.

We’ve been here before. Some of us old fucks have gone from BBS to IRC to sites like SA, GenMay, Digg, Reddit. It’s jus the nature of the beast.

Gonna miss the solid App support Reddit had but it’s only a matter of time before there are many great options for Lenny. Wefwef while browser based is actually really nice!

For me it was BBSs, Slashdot, Kuro5hin, Fark, Bannination, Hacker News, Reddit. And now the 'verse.

Good luck to all the Lemmy and Mastodon app coders, and to all the people hacking away at great front ends to the same.

There’s definitely going to be growing pains, attacks, victories and losses. But I think it’ll be worth it.

Since the fediverse is protocol and standards based it has potential. Email is ubiquitous.

Reddit apparently doesn’t remember the digg migration and I hope they suffer the same fate.

The creator said he’s moving to another platform centered around discussion mostly (no posts I think). I forget the name of it but he put a link in the goodbye message

Tildes isn’t bad either, though its invite only at the moment (I got one in a couple days by emailing them), and it doesn’t have an app. If somebody makes an app for it, that’d be nice.

I know everyone has made the switch, but the ReVanced team have stolen the API keys out of the real Reddit app and have made patchers available for multiple Reddit apps including RiF.

You’ll need a fresh copy of the APK and:

    https://github.com/revanced/revanced-manager

Obviously NSFW is a no go but everything else should work.

Without porn, patching old RIF is genuinely not worth it. I’d rather wait and support the new Lemmy app by the same dev

I’m not a prude but I genuinely had no idea it was that big a thing on Reddit. I thought it all generally disappeared a few years ago. Just shows how huge a site it was I guess

I’m in the same boat, but thought I’d let people know just in case. My app of choice RelayForReddit is switching to a subscription model but 70% of my Reddit use was NSFW subs so not really worth it for me

I didn’t try the process myself, last I heard they were using keys extracted from the official Reddit app. Maybe they thought that was a bad idea, and went a different route. Sorry, was just going by what I heard previously

I setup Reddit Vanced just to follow a few niche topics that are hard to find elsewhere, but even with the patches it’s still a mess.

There’s a reflection instance called lemmit.online that copy posts from subreddits. I’m using it to keep up with a few subreddits while I’m on holiday. When I get home I’ll setup communities on lemmy for them.

RIF was Reddit to me. The official app and even the desktop site are so foreign and convoluted that they don’t even register as being the same website.

Same here, it’s literally the only reddit mobile app I’ve ever used, the site just feels… wrong, without it.

I paid for RIF and I’d do it again in a second. Hopefully the lemmy ecosystem comes up to its high standard one day!
