There is an app by divested computing group that wraps google maps in a webview. Can be very privacy firendly depending on the browser your system uses as it’s webview. I only use it if other maps don’t work. Organic maps is crazy good.

Your phone, when connected to a cellular network, can be tracked by cellular towers. Take a single tower to which you are connected. The tower has a multitude of devices which are connected to it. Since latency is a large issue due to distance, communication is less trivial. To prevent waiting for packets from a device for too long, the cell tower will divide a certain time into sectors. In each of these sectors, one device is supposed to send it’s packet. To hit this time window however, the device has to send it’s packet in advance, as to cancel out the latency of the transmission. By how much is determined by the distance between the cell tower and the device. This system requires knowledge of distance. This distance has to be close enough to the real distance, to cancel out latency and maximize the time a device can send data. With obstacles that may reflect the waves, the preciseness of the distance determined is correlated to the stability of the connection. Given that a lot of people can be using a cell tower at once, there are towers which are segmented. These work slightly differently than non segmented ones, in that they have multiple antenna sending and receiving signals in different directions. A segment of a tower with 6 segments would then be responsible for all devices which are in the area of 60 degrees from the tower. The distance together with the general direction already gives us a pretty accurate depiction of the user’s location. However, since most towers are neither segmented, nor would a say 6 segmented one give as accurate of a reading if the device is 3 miles away (that would be a possible curve of pi(≈3) miles which the device could be on, given a perfectly flat ground), let’s make this even more interesting. With a simple, rough time stamp, we can find out the location of a device up to an accuracy of a single point. Add a second cell tower, make the device connect to the towers one at a time and you have the exact position of the device. Well, pretty close to exact at least.

With that said, the reason why a sim card is the issue in this constellation is the unique identifier. If a network of cell towers can determine where you are located and the imsi is tied to your identity, then your location is tied to your identity. And if you think, even for a second, that mobile internet providers would not take advantage of this, think again. A very popular example of this are malls wanting to know where their customers came from.

Now, if you have a device with GrapheneOS (DivestOS too I think, don’t know) for example, then you will have the ability to entirely switch off the cellular antenna of your phone (which one should likely do if they don’t have a sim anyways). This is supported by hardware due to airplane mode, where the airplane requires least interference.

Well, if you want to activate an esim on any other Android rom, you need to use Google services and have an internet connection. DivestOS is the first rom to implement an open source version of eUICC, which is used for activation, called OpeneUICC. It also does not need an internet connection, so nobody knows that the esim is installed on your device. That is, until you actually use it, of course. This is in line with DivestOS actively trying to “deblob” (remove binary, closed source parts of) Android.

The second part, about why sim is not very private, well it has a unique identifier and the technology was specifically designed to pinpoint your location, as this helps keep a good connection.

That argument is no argument since we humans, no matter how advanced our language is, still follow rules. Without rules in language, we would not understand what the other person were saying. Granted, we learn these rules through listening, repeating and using what sounds right. But the exact same thing is happening with LLMs. They learn from the data we feed them. It’s not like we give them the rules to english and they can only understand english then. The first time they come into contact with the concept of grammar is when they get data, most often in english, that tells them about grammar. We all follow rules. That’s exactly how we work. We’re still a lot smarter than LLMs though, so it might seem as if they are vastly inferior. And while I do believe that most complex organisms do have “deeper thought” in that our thought has more layers and is generally fitter for the real world, there is no way I’m not gonna call a neural network that can answer me complex questions, which may have never been asked in the history of mankind, an AI. Because it is very much intelligent. It’s just not alive. We humans tend to think of ourselves too favorably. “We” are just a neural network. Just a different kind. Just like a computer is similar to the human brain, but a wire is not. Where do you draw the line?

I have used Google until a few years ago. I have used their OSs, I have used their search, told it things that I would not tell a human. My main social media was always Youtube. My work uses Google products. We use Google Workspace, Angular, Google’s cloud service, basically anything that is not device specific is in some way related to Alphabet. Yet I only access my work account over Tor when I can and I do not install company software on my phone (With the exception of one 2fa code, which might change with the aid of a hardware key). I run Qubes os to have full control of the things that happen on my device. When I use Google Meet, I quickly give the vm that my browser runs on the permission to use my mic and if I feel generous my webcam. Meeting finished? Permission revoked. Nobody at my work has ever said a negative word, in fact most people find the way I work fascinating, which allows me to share this way with them. It may seem like you can’t control this, or that it’s gotten out of hand, but that is not true. You just have to start and don’t stop going. It’s not terribly hard either, it just takes quite some reading and some actions. I believe that in a years time most people in priviledged countries are able to cross most of the bIg CoRp SpYwArE out of their lifes. In fact, I have seen and helped dozens do so and the longest it took someone to get a more private life this way was about 8 months. That person was not great with technology (I hate IT support so much I could cry).

The one benefit that I have noticed the most is related to targeted ads, no surprise there. It goes ridiculously deep. I always thought that I am impervious to ads and, well, there was some truth to that. When Google showed me ads, I either disregarded them, or they were just not catered to me, because “I tricked the system”. Well, bullshit. I’ve noticed that since I use Piped instead of Youtube, the videos I get recommending products I am interested in are far less frequent. They made me believe that I had hair loss and I bought vitamins for my hair. I am 19. I have a full head of hair.

Like all things in life, digital privacy is an area one can improve on. I have found living like this to improve my mental health. I am no longer kept in a never ending loop of advertisements and algorithms that feed me shit. As a result, I have gotten vastly more productive. I have lost interest in most of my expensive hobbies. By the time that I got out of this never ending loop of crap, my mind has started to wander again and I no longer have a problem with ADHD (it’s still there, but it doesn’t cause issues in my daily life). This might seem unintuitive, but I am just much more relaxed amd focused because if the lack of mentsl pressure. Being caught infused by so much content numbs most people. Ever looked at a person that blankly stares at their screen? Well, you are likely no different right now. My father has recently told me about a study where they compared looking at screens to a trance like state. When we look at something in the real world, our eyes move a lot. Evne if we focus on something. When we are under a trance, our eyes do not move. We blankly stare at what we are looking at. Sounds familiar? What I mean to say is not that they are manipulating you through trance, it is simply a very similar action. I don’t think I need to tell you how much one can be influenced simply by the text they read on their screen. There are alternatives to the tools you use for your work. Use them. It will not mean the end of your career. And if you seriously can not find any alternative, cross them out of your private life anyways. That’s what privacy is about anyways. Use a free Proton Mail instead of a GMail or Outlook. Buy Minecraft, but never use your acoount to play. Play with an offline account and, while you’re at it, use a mod that disables telemetry. Yes, Microsoft tracks you in Minecraft. How else did you think they could monitor chats? They store them too, so be careful what yiu want to share, as you do not only share with players.

Do yourself a favour. Keep your mind clean. If a random teen did it, you can do it. And I am by far not the only one.
