List a country with a decent population of like at least 50 mio people that competes with companies successfully and fairly. Countries with a smaller population don’t have as much of a bureaucratic overhead. But even there… where do they offer a better service in a fair competition with companies
Nah I don’t think the government should run a search engine
Fine the heck out of them then. If they don’t pay the fine ban em. Plenty of alternatives out there. More competition in the search engine market would be better anyways.
Not too big of a fan of banning companies as the hurdles should be decently high… Especially if many people rely on their service but if they won’t comply with our jurisdiction long term I see this as the only option as fees can not be order of business to pay
Yes they would. Thats why Beeper is working on changing to a bridge setup that works client-side and not server-side. Remember, that Discord is not encrypted and authorities can just get your data from discord directly. Do not use discord in any sort of private context whatsoever. I don’t believe Discord itself isn’t actively using my messaging data anyways
I think it’s easily understandable honestly. They got to this point a certain way and it’s become habit and a source of their power which they strive to increase. At a certain level of wealth it also just increases by itself.
Community =/= instance
Relies on enough people figuring out or getting enough issues with one community to actively do so. How often has this actually happened?
How do you raise your voice in a community if you get silenced there?
I think instances that host certain communities have the responsibilty of setting a certain baseline for mods. In reality if a community on a certain topic gets big enough most people will join the biggest instance of their community of interest.
I think instances should be allowed to set their own direction but genocide denial is something I really can’t have. Most lurkers and regular commentors (even on something like a meme community) will never see the bias and modlog of the mods. In an ideal world your approach would work but I doubt it does in reality as some communities become too big to fail and become the default. The mod would have to do a lot wrong to mess it up after that
The mods of that community don’t own .world do and they do have the power to remove mods that don’t follow general policy and abuse their power

B… But I thought 2025 would be the year of the Linux desktop!
Personally I’ve been using FreeTube for accessing YouTube as they are FOSS. Only thing I wish they would have a feature to share like subs with Tubular and watch history somehow. It doesn’t have all the platforms Grayjay has but for just YouTube its pretty great
Where do I stop with the murder? Whats the criteria to be evil and deserve to die? Who decides what justice is? I agree that its a slippery slope and its why I think self justice like this is more self righteousness than anything
Then you’d need a majority in democracy to vote in their interests. But they voted for Trump, a man who wants to get rid of the ACA and impose senseless tariffs on all countries while cutting down on regulation that keeps people save and installing his own unhinged lackeys. Harsh rhetoric, but I want to say the American people have voted against their interest, and if political pressure was there change would be possible. I like that this issue is getting attention but I strongly question people calling for more murder and chaos.
You don’t need to be a good person to have a reason not to be killed.
Being a human being is already enough in most cases. His death does not change anything
I am honestly appreciate, that not everyone shares the same bloodlust people on lemmy have
I personally think even in this case a precious life is lost. I haven’t dug into the potential use of AI to deny claims which is highly unethical. I come more from an approach of utilitarianism: Every life/lifetime has some sort of potential joy and value to it. If for example a regime falls and a dictator causing a lot of loss of value (in this case life and quality of life) dies, the equation is a positive one if people get to live longer better lives. The dictator is the main reason for suffering.
In the case with the CEO he isn’t the main reason for suffering, rather the system is. He has to bear part of the responsibility but his death doesn’t have a positive outcome in our equations because the death changes nothing. He also isn’t fully responsible for the system which is the root problem of the health system.
I myself also believe generally murder is in nearly all cases wrong, and does while I am against the Genocide in Gaza I do think you’re at least partially talking about my group and generalizing it to make an obscene argument. Your example is actually perfect valid and if a person doesn’t care about genocide/death in gaza they can’t claim the moral high ground if they only value this kind of life. Its also distracting a bit from the main point of life and especially a life of good quality having value.
I mean endorsing violence shouldn’t be promoted so I do think thats a good thing
