  • Corporate control over an algorithm that decides who is served what content is a platform-agnostic tool of power over society. We’re seeing that danger manifest in old and new ways every single day. That lever of power allows whomever owns that particular medium to push whatever content they like. That is the entire motivation behind and purpose of the Fediverse and other decentralization efforts.

Zuck and muskrat separate populations, push propaganda and influence discussions at an unprecedented level. The control a single corporation, a single authoritarian point of power has over such vast swathes of population dwarfs the propagandic power of Goebbles and Stalin by an order of magnitude or more.

I don’t blame America explicitly like the other commenter. The conditions that have allowed the billionaire class to explode and wield power and influence exist elsewhere in the world as well. That said, America’s legal and regulatory frameworks did provide particularly fertile breeding grounds for the exploitation and hoarding of capital that produces billionaires.

  • Check out Blotted Science and Behold…the Arctopus! Anything with Ron Jarzombek (Blotted) and Colin Marston (Behold) should scratch that itch. I don’t have much microtonal in the library but now you’ve got me wanting to dig deeper. I’ll get back to you in a few days!

Otherwise if you’re cool with avant-garde in general I’d also recommend Dodecahedron, Imperial Triumphant, Igorrr, Meshuggah (THE polyrhythm kings), and Unexpect.

  • Guitar virtuosity is rampant in metal! You should take a look at Tosin Abasi - start with TRAM, then his bandmate Javier’s project Mestís, then his band Animal’s as Leaders’s album The Joy of Motion. TRAM is modern jazz, Mestís is very Spanish influenced, and AAL is one of my favorite bands of all time. All (primarily) instrumental.

CHON and Covet are both chill prog/math-rock with incredible guitar work. I’d recommend CHON’s Newborn Sun EP or Homey LP. Covet’s first two releases, Currents EP and Effloresce, have been my sleeping music every night for a couple years at this point.

I can recommend heavier/harsh stuff as well, but based on your current preferences these are good starting points. Feel free to keep replying or DM if you want more!

  • how good it was when they were young

Sorry did I miss a decade? My youth consisted of hanging chads -> 9/11 -> The War on Oil -> 2008 financial crisis -> the death of Hope via congressional fuckery -> Trump. When were things good…? I had hope for universal healthcare with Obama and hope for Bernie before Trump 1.0 but now I’m not sure what to look forward to. That said; can’t stop won’t stop.

I honestly and truly hope you and yours remain healthy and happy. I don’t begrudge you that or wish you ill. But I haven’t seen good times and at this point don’t really expect to.

  • Within a first last the post voting framework, a vote for a candidate that has an acknowledged 0.0000000000000001% chance of winning is functionally equivalent to taking the advice from Carrie Underwood’s 2005, Grammy award-winning song “Jesus Take the Wheel” seriously.

With that vote you are tacitly submitting to the whims of the masses which in this election means you functionally endorsed Trump for president. Did you think Trump would do better by the Palestinians than Kamala would? Because your vote for Stein (which was absolutely a vote protesting Kamala’s genocide denial) shows an indifference and disrespect for the power of your vote.

Congratulations, you have consciously made the decision to be a single-issue voter and by doing so personally contributed to Trump’s reelection. The Palestinian corpses that will be bulldozed to make room for Trump Land thank you for your service.
